Beginners Guide To Blogging

So you want to create a blog, but you have no idea where to start? This is common for most of us, however this post will hopefully help give you some tips and tricks on a guide to blogging if you are a beginner. It should help you with what you need to do to start a blog, how to actually promote your blog and just some common answers to some questions you might find yourself asking at the start.

Firstly, be yourself. Blogging should be something you enjoy, if you enjoy cooking, you will probably post recipe posts, if you love fashion, you will most likely post style related posts. The list goes on, but you just need to know what you like and what you want to talk about. Even if you can’t decide and want to have a blog about a variety of different topics, that's great! The most important thing is that it is true to who you are and what you like; you will also find that way easier for creating content, as it is something you are passionate about! It’s hard to be noticed in a place that is now very popular, but being yourself is the most important thing and creating your own space is a game changer!
Quality Over Quantity. If you can only think of one post over two weeks and you are struggling to come up with more ideas, that is OK! Don’t try and force posts if you are not interested in them. Quality is always better than quantity! If you need time to plan some posts, take your time and know that no one expects you to post everyday. You want to create content that you are proud of, so don’t rush into things.

Be Consistent. This may sound contradicting to the point above, but I don’t mean it like that. If you only post once a week, once every 2 weeks, once a month, or once every day that is absolutely fine. Just try and upload consistent content so your readers stay interested and know when they can expect a post, this doesn’t have to be every other day for example, create a schedule that you are comfortable with, that’s all that matters.

Use Social Media. The main platforms you should be using are Twitter and Instagram. You can also use Pinterest too, but I won’t talk about that, as I am still getting my head around it! Twitter is great for promoting your blog, you can follow other bloggers and people with similar interests/people with blogs you like to read and share your content. You can also use hastags as a way of boosting your engagments and tagging Blog Sharing networks such as TheBloggersHub, TheGirlGang and FemaleBloggerRT. These networks normally have thousands of followers and will share your post if you tag them, meaning you will have a lot more engagement on your posts. Instagram is also a great way to promote your blog. Again, following other bloggers you like and people with similar interests is great as you can then share your content with them and they are more likely to enjoy it. Also uploading teaser pictures or blog graphics with your blog link and hashtags is a great way for more people to see your posts. You can use up to 30 Hashtags on Instagram, meaning more and more people will have a chance to see your blog. You can also use ‘Instagram Pods’, some people aren't keen, but I think they are good way to expose your blog to some people who might not normally see it. You have to like and comment on the other members posts so they get more engagement. However, I would recommend only joining pods if you are truly interested in the content.

Learn How To Make Your Blog Visually Pleasing. Honestly, this is something I am still doing! Whether you are using Blogger, Wordpress or any other CMS, you can use free templates they provide and create your blog. My simple tips for this is to make sure the font is easy to read, the page is not too busy and you can clearly see your posts in a neat and organised way, this looks more pleasing to the viewer. You can also buy a domain name, like I have, but this is not a necessity.

Be Organised. To some extent, you will have to be organised. Blogging isn’t just sitting down and writing a few words and your done. Your job will also include; photography, promoter, writer, researcher, an influencer and much much more! But if you can keep on top of it all and stay organised, its so much fun! Try using scheduling apps too such as buffer to schedule tweets and instagrams if you are busy one day. I also try and plan some posts in advance so that if I have a busy week, I have back up posts!

But most importantly, have fun. Enjoy yourself, otherwise, what is the point? It’s supposed to be fun whether it’s a job or a hobby. Just have fun and be you!
